Hendrick Avercamp · Enjoying the Ice near a Town, 1620
A whole town out on the ice, painted from a high viewpoint so the figures spread evenly across the picture with no single focus. Avercamp was deaf and mute, and worked almost exclusively on winter scenes during the run of exceptionally cold decades now called the Little Ice Age. There is a great deal of misbehaviour in the crowd. Message inside reads: Season's Greetings
