Robert Braithwaite Martineau · The Christmas Hamper, 1850
A hamper being unpacked in a Victorian household, with the contents and the reactions to them doing the storytelling. Martineau was a pupil of Holman Hunt and painted modern domestic subjects in Pre-Raphaelite detail, where every object on the table is there to tell you something about the family. Message inside reads: Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
